ENABLED ENTREPRENEURSHIP DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM IN BIOTECHNOLOGY

WITH Ekta Incubation Centre as a part of West Bengal University of Technology is the first of its kind in the region and has become operational from December 1, 2005 in the second campus of WBUT situated in Sector V of Salt Lake City. Along with the department of Biotechnology of WBUT it is working towards the development of Biotechnology based products for the commercial purpose. As of January 2007, Ekta Incubation Centre has been awarded 'Technology Business Incubator' status by National Science & Technology Entrepreneurship Development Board, Department of Science and Technology, Govt. of India. Entrepreneurship is not people who have opted to build their enterprises, as they could not secure 'lucrative' jobs. These groups of people create wealth for the nation. We as a society must encourage them. Keeping it in mind, the' Technology enabled Entrepreneurship Development Program' was designed. The program
was divided into two parts. The first part of program was the hands
on training on 'Plant Tissue Culture' in a biotech laboratory of 'Subhashree
Biotech' conducted by the expert biotechnologists and other part was
the 'Business Training Module' held in Ekta's campus conducting by the
renowned resource personalities in the field of 'Business Managements'
as well as 'Entrepreneurship'. In addition it was circulated among the
neighboring institutions and put up at the website of 'Ekta Incubation
Centre'. The participants were mostly graduates and preferably with
some exposure of Biotechnology. The hands on training on 'Plant Tissue Culture' as held in the laboratory of Subhashree Biotech was conducted by the following resource person : -
The focus was in creating entrepreneurial skill sets mainly through hands on training in the domain of 'Plant Tissue Culture' i.e. - i) Basic concepts on Plant Tissue Culture, ii) Practical training on callus development, iii) Training on Biofertilizer production, iv) Basic training on micro biology (Micropropagation, Production of disease-free plants, Plant breeding, Production of disease-and pest-resistant plants), v) Control of Contamination. The laboratory was well equipped with all updated facilities as related to the 'Plant Tissue Culture ' research works and its hands on training. Participants were very much happy with the said laboratory and its infrastructures. The 'Business Training Module' and 'Business Plan' was carried out in the campus of Ekta and conducted by the following resource personalities : -
The part of Business Training Module was designed by Sri Arindam Dutta, Advisor & Member Secretary of Ekta Incubation Centre and conducted very carefully by the renowned resource personalities. The Business Training Module mostly consisted of i) Introduction to the Business training Module, ii) Entrepreneurship, iii) Principles of Management, iv) Personality Development, v) Communication Skills, vi) Quality Management, vii) Best Practices, viii) Concepts Economics and Agro Economics, ix) Basic concepts of accounts, x) Financial Management, xi) Logistics, xii) Sourcing Finance, xiii) Thinking Strategically, xiv) Understanding Human Behaviour, xv) Marketing & marketing Survey. Lectures as given by the fellow resource personalities were very much accepted and appreciated by the participants. A 'Business Plan' program was performed among the participants by setting of a team and adjudged by a group of independent Panelists on the day of valedictory. The Panelists were as follows:
During the period of 'Business Training Module' the team was exposed to the idea of preparing a 'Business Plan' and on the conclusion of the 'Business Training Module' each team was asked to do a 'Local Market Survey' (in the area from where they hail) towards writing their 'Business Plan'. The 'Certificate of Appreciation' was awarded all the members of the best team for preparing a' Business Plan' in writing and all the participants were also awarded with a 'Certificate of Participation' by the organizers. The valedictory program was placed at Ekta's conference hall on 6th of June'2007 at 11-00 A.M. with launch, in the presence of the following guests: -
